The Most Common Types of Welding

Welding is defined as the process of using heat or pressure to fuse together two or more pieces of metal or thermoplastics. This process of using heat softens the metal, allowing it to fix together as one in a joint area when the correct amount of pressure is applied. The concept of welding has been around since the Middle Ages, although the process of welding as we know it today did not develop until the late nineteenth century. Practically every building or object which has made society what it is today has utilized some kind of welding, making welders highly employable. There are many different methods of welding used in home construction; here are some of the most common.

Arc Welding

Arc welding is one of the most popular forms of welding due to its low cost. The process of arc welding begins with a device that gives off an electric current. Although this device can differ greatly between projects, it always enables an electric current to move through materials which would be considered non-constructive without the device. The basic form of arc welding was invented in the early nineteenth century, and today there are many different subcategories of arc welding.

Electroslag Welding

Developed in the mid 1950’s, electroslag welding is a relatively fast welding process which is used to join together large materials such as thick steel plates. The plates or materials which are welded using this process are usually arranged at a vertical position. The weld is designed to be used at an angle without causing any distortion to the welder, and uses water filled copper areas within the device.

Flux-Cored Welding

The flux-cored welding process was developed and put into practice in the early 1950’s. The purpose of this process was to give another option to the popular use of stick welding. As it is an automatic form of welding, the flux-cored process is mainly used for projects which require fast speed. Due to the speed and ability of the process to use on various materials in multiple situations, it is commonly used by construction workers on the job.

Gas Metal Arc Welding

Created in the 1940’s, gas metal arc welding is another automatic method of welding. This process includes the use of a welding gun which automatically feeds the metal to be welded through the gun for use. Gas metal arc welding was originally developed for use with aluminum metals and is best for a large quantity of welding work as it saves a lot of time. Today this method is mainly used by welders in the manufacturing and automobile repair industries although you will sometimes see it performed in the construction business.

MIG (Metal Inert Gas) Welding

This is a process of welding which uses a gas to shield the weld metal. This gas keeps the metal from being affected by natural elements in the environment, allowing the welder to operate at a continuous rate, making the process quite quick. Originally developed in the 1940’s, the method was fully updated in the 1960’s.
